BBC Review of Girls Aloud ‘Chemistry’

Girls_aloudWow at this photo of Girls Aloud.  Just how unstyled do they all look?

Sg

And how reminiscent is it of this Spice Girls shoot.

Girls Aloud 3rd album Chemistry came out on Monday...

GA have resusciatated pop's corpse by wedding chart-friendly melodies to experimental avant-garde sounds, particularly on the sublime Swinging London Town.

Lovely to see an article on Simon in the Observer magazine today.

The third most inspirational person to die this year after Mo Mowlam and Ronnie Barker...

Live Review : Sons & Daughters

Sd_3On Monday evening, Shall, James & myself headed down to LSE to see Sons & Daughters.

After confusing various students with the building we were after we realised we were actually meant to be at Kings College.  Thankfully that was only 5 mins walk away.

Clor were meant to be supporting.  They weren't there though and thanks to a dippy receptionist telling me the wrong time earlier in the day, we had to stand through the frankly diabolical VV & the Villains.

Anyway, Sons & Daughters themselves were TOTALLY awesome.    Find out how awesome at CDUK Online.

CD:UK review: Will Young - Keep On

Will_young
"Will's voice lends itself to the bossanova beats of this song brilliantly: you can picture him bursting into song, tap dancing down the street and twirling round lampposts.  Clocking in at rather long five minutes, 20 seconds, it ends with a fancy organ breakdown followed by dazzling Spanish guitars."

Next weekend!

Next weekend my favourite Welsh girl Milly is in town visiting! Yay!

Thursday, we'll be going somewhere special and then she'll have the joy of Miss-Shapes. and Friday, Popstarz with Skin.

But I'm taking Friday off work and she's here all of Sat too.   So if you have any suggestions for cool things to go see / do in London next weekend, let me know, because we're going to rock this town!

Hey, punka, HEY!

Kenickie
I think I might go to Unskinny Bop   on Saturday with "Greg" from Londonist for a bit of a boogie.  I've never been before, and it involves venturing east so it will be a challenge.  But, how can I possibly resist a club who's last playlist includes Shampoo, Girls Aloud, All Girl Summer Fun Band, Kelis, Madge,  Elastica, Bikini Kill, Kenickie, Kate Bush, and Jay Z.   Anyone else who fancies it just hoot.  Sounds small though so I think we'll have to get there quite early, particularly as it seems to be the first one since April.

Tonight we're playing at Trash Palace and then hot footing it to play at  Popstarz a bit later on.  We spent a lot of last night looking at Shine compilations so we'll be playing some tracks that you will either think are forgotten classics or absolute tosh.

I'm spending a lot of time listening to Kenickie at the moment.  I'm so cutting edge obviously (!) but their tracks are so damn catchy!  Also The Modern have been rocking my boat since we saw them at Ibiza Rocks earlier in the year, and I've just got their album sampler which is quite frankly brilliant.   I heard Bis - Eurodisco for the first time last night and that reminded me of the Modern a lot.  Kandy Pop is interesting, and I've loved Dead Wrestlers for ages, so maybe it's time this girl did a bit of Bis investigation.  The new Girls Aloud album, Chemistry, landed in my grubby paws last Friday and is their best album yet.  It's full of Betty Boo-esque raps and Spice-y ballads.   Hooray.  Talking of Betty Boo, has anything happened yet with Wig-Wam, her apparnant side project with Alex James of Blur.  Sounded like it was going to be interesting!

Finally in a week or so I have review tickets to see Kelly Clarkson at Koko which is exciting me lots.  Yes, I only know about 3 songs, but damn they are good.  Let's just wait for a Kelly / Linkin collaboration shall we.   Talking of which, can we have a Linkin Park UK tour please?  It's always the unlikely ones that like Linkin Park isn't it :-)

What’s going on?

BoyzLast week James and I went to a small studio in Hoxton for a photoshoot and interview for Boyz magazine for the best up and coming DJs in London.  For some reason we were included! Hooray.

You can see a small picture of it here but either go to the Boyz website to see it in full or have a look on my flickr stream .

We're also going to be stopping doing Trash Palace on a Friday in the next couple of weeks and instead moving to be residents at Popstarz  itself. Woo.

And finally in DJ news, we've just put up our DJ website hoping to capture some interest of the back of the article.  Any ideas or thoughts on the basic site, let me know!

PipettesOn the writing front, I've been doing more writing for Londonist, which if you're a London kid, you really should read, as it tells you about loads of cool stuff going on, and both myself and Ricky write for it.  You can see my small number of posts here.

I'm quite excited at the moment as I managed to get an article about one of my favourite, little known, groups, The Pipettes, onto the CDUK site.  You can read that here!  Hooray!

Friday night at Trash Palace I was on my tod as James was violently being sick everywhere and was in bed.   Last night I was being sick everywhere *yuck*.  I feel awful.

I must get some energy though as I need to write the content for our new DJ website.   Last week we had a photoshoot for Boyz magazine and an interview with us will appear this week as their choice of up and coming indie DJs. Whoo.

This week you can catch us on Friday night at Trash Palace between 7 and 11pm and then later on the same evening at <a href="http://www.popstarz.org">Popstarz</a>.

Ghetto

Ghetto, originally uploaded by trixie.

I love this photo.

James took it on the Friday of Reading festival. We had foolishly left our tent in the office of the club, and had to drag Sandra out on her day off to let us back in. Whoops. Thanks miss d!

Anyway it's so rare that we are there in daylight that it was a good waste of time to photograph it. The way the word has been painted on is so perfect it almost looks like it's been photoshopped on over the top.

The great British public

I love writing about music.  One of the funniest things about it is when you go back to your pieces and read comments that have been left.  Some are great, they actually talk about the music and challenge opinion, and it's great that this interactivity is avaliable.

Some, however, are just funny.

Recently I wrote about how I didn't think the new Sugababes album was very good.  Here are some words on what others think:

"GOD R U DEAF OR WOT REVIEWER! this ablums amazing! heidi is sooo much better than that ginger 1 that was ere b4."

"I dont know whether the reviewer was listening to the new sugababes album or some pre sample of Girls Aloud's new album. Its clearly obvious that the sugababes must have blanked him at one stage in his stalker life, and he's figured him dis thm with a bad review, cos this album rocks, "

"the reviewer is obviously an atomic kitten fan."

"i dnt agree wit dat review at al! the sugababes r the greatest, even if the album wasn't 2 gd it wud still b brilliant cos the sugababes mad it! msg 2 the reviwer - hav u got waxy ears lol"

And when I praised Rachel's latest offering for being a pop masterpiece, the music snob brigade came in:

"crap sorry but crap, the only REAL music is music with GOOD lyrics. an exmaple is soul music, soul has very powerful strong lyrics with feelings and meanings unlike the pop we get now i dont know what the music is coming to. the only artist in pop with good lyrics and all the rest of it is Michael Jackson. no one will ever be able to top him, he is great! i true superstar. to me the only superstar. no wonder he is the king of pop. well to some up its not very good sorry oh and by the way i am only 13."

"This entire thread and article is ludicrous. I refuse to believe for a second that this is a "classic" album. Is the author really suggesting it rivals such classics as ‘Siamese Dream’, ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magic’, ‘Blonde on Blonde’, ‘Bad’, ‘The Queen is Dead’, ‘Back in Black’, ‘The Joshua Tree’ etc. etc. etc. I don't need to here this manufactured, disposable noise to realise that such plastic music to come from Rachel Stevens’s management is nothing more than a few catchy choruses filled out with empty, nonsensical lyrics. Albums like this are anything but classics are truly degrade the real meaning and power of music."

That's enough to put a smile on my face for a while.

Dreadful Awful Rubbish : My friend Simon

Simon3On Sunday, our friend, Simon died unexpectedly, an hour or two after we last saw him.

I'm not going to go on about how he changed the landscape of clubbing and life for so many people. You can read that in other places. I want to remember my friend Simon, the guy who wasn't just our boss, but a man we respected, a man we cherished, a man we loved and pretty much over the last 6 months, the centre of our universe.

I started going to Popstarz soon after moving to London in around September 2004. James and I always noticed this tall, omnipresent guy with black hair who was obviously involved in the club in someway. He was constantly there, and we found him quite a scary, foreboding prescence.

Roll forward and it's May 2005. James & I arrive back from New York and head in a deleriously jetlagged state to Miss-Shapes at Ghetto, run by the same man. We see a poster saying there will be auditions for a DJ for the club and I'm straight on the case. We applied, headed down to Trash Palace to do a set and got the gig, all while nervously speaking to this guy we now know is Simon. He compliments us on our set, gives us some drink vouchers, and later not so subtly hints that the job is ours, though he'll have to confirm that with Sandra. James and I look at each other amazed that this guy is even talking to us.

And that was that. Suddenly we were thrust into the spotlight, and into the world I fondly called The Hobart Empire. We were living out some of our dreams, DJing in a place we loved, meeting fantastic people and getting us and our friends into Popstarz for free. How cool was that!

We spent the next 6 months getting to know him. Both of us still in awe of him, but wondering how on earth we ever found him scary. He was so generous, letting us in everywhere for free, plying us with free drinks, and talking to us, telling us his fabulous stories of days gone by.

It was probably in the last 2 months, as he and J became closer, that I got to really know him and he changed from being the awe-inducing Simon Hobart, to being our friend Simon, Suddenly I was playing cupid, determined that these two great guys should be together. I helped J pick nice restaurants and filled Simon in on Js' quirks and eccentricities.

Going to Ghetto was something I knew I could always do happily, even by myself. A few weeks ago I showed up after another party by myself at 1 in the morning knowing that inside I'd be able to enjoy myself even if I didn't know anyone there. But I did, Simon of course was there, and we drunkedly spent the next 3 hours drinking and gossiping. It was great fun, and a far cry away from my fear of the immortal gothic prince that we used to see from afar. Similarly I could show up at Trash Palace, hook up with Simon and then head to Ghetto with him where we'd buy each other drinks and have a good gossip. In the last month or so, we were pretty much a regular feature at Ghetto from Wednesday til Saturday and we certainly wouldn't have been there that much if Simon hadn't been there.

And so to the final night. After having been out all day, James & I eventually rocked up to Ghetto at 12.45 just in time for Simon's set at 1am. We greeted, we danced and then at about 3, we left. I told him to call me when he woke up about DJing on Sunday, and kissed him goodbye. And that was that.

I feel a bit embarassed at myself. Last night a group of his friends all got together and went out. There are people who have known him forever and there I am bursting into tears every two minutes. Perhaps I'm just not very good at coping with grief and being strong, but I do need to be strong for everyone else,.

I feel so sad and devastated. It doesn't feel real, we showed up to DJ, made a phone call and got this terrible news. I can't imagine walking down those stairs at Ghetto and him not being at the bottom. I can't imagine going into Popstarz and looking forward to seeing him at the first bar and realising he's not there and never will be. I'm just walking round my flat crying in a permanent state of disbelief. We walked from Wardour Street up to Falconberg Court when we got the news, and walking down Old Compton it felt like the world should stop. Why are there people walking round doing their usual business. It felt like Soho should be still.

I, like a lot of people, loved that man, and it's near impossible to describe how great he was to people who didn't know him. He was funny, intelligent, inspiring, handsome and kind.

He was so important to the way we operated that it's even more impossible to imagine how our world can carry on without him.

Simon, please come back. I miss you.

Today

Today we lost a great man, a hero and a dear friend.   And also the only person who wasn't me who I would ever consider to be good enough for James :-)

Simon, we love you x

Burning the candle at both ends

Currently I'm sat in a very cool place, earning quite a bit of money for not much work.  Sounds great huh?

The catch is its 817 and I've been up since 540.  The double catch is I only went to bed at 3.40.  Boo.

Last night was our first Friday at Trash Palace, which we'll be doing each week from now on.  We then went to Popstarz, and then I got 'dragged' to Ghetto for a little while.   Upon leaving there was a lucky appearance of a cab so it's not as bad as it could be.

But now half way through the show, I am flagging to the max.

Today it will be home, sleep, if I wake up in time - a trip to Spitafields to visit our pig, then probably back to ghetto.  I'm such a glutton for punishment!  Boooo.

Oi! Give me some!

Oi! Give me some!, originally uploaded by g_lined.

My friends are scaring me muchly with this 'experiment'.

Happy 36th Birthday Grover!

Insidegrover
Happy Birthday to the best of all the muppets

I could rant about how unfairly Grover has been treated in life, how that wanker of a creature they call Elmo manipulated and destroyed Grover in the eyes of the CTW production team, but I'll leave that to the brilliant 'Grover is Bitter' .

Let's just remember the great times he gave us when we were growing up.   And continue spending time each night with our Elmo voodoo doll made of POO.

When Trixie met Ladytron

Ladytron203_203x152_1"We’ve
ended up becoming a cult band.  I don’t know if we do want to be
mainstream, we don’t want to get so big that all our fans get bored of
us. We’d sooner just gradually grow over 5 or 6 albums rather than have
some huge hit that becomes an albatross."

Find out what else the band had to say when I caught up with Danny & Reuben at CD:UK towers last week here.

Ladytron - Witching Hour

Ladytronwitching_2
"For a band so oft accused of being detached and cold, this album is filled with emotion, from the forcefulness of Destroy to the snarl of Mira's Bulgarian sung Fighting in Built Up Areas."

Find out a little bit more about Ladytron's Witching Hour here.

Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better

Franz

"They haven't suddenly decided they are going to become oh so serious,
with no track clocking in at longer than just over 4 minutes, nor have
they lost the fun and vibrancy that made us love them in the first
place. The change comes, most obviously, in production values."

Find out what else I thought about Franz's 2nd album here.

Rachel Stevens - Come And Get It

Rachel_album"Bold, Swaggering and Accomplished - three words you
would perhaps not expect to hear when talking about Rachel Stevens; but
these are fair comment when describing her sophomore album 'Come and
Get It'. Quite simply, it's the pop album of the year and a far cry
from the wilting 'Funky Dory'."

Review: Ladytron at Popstarz, 23 Sept 05

114

'Their notoriously reserved onstage demeanour makes even
the slightest indication of a smile an unexpected thrill, so when lead
vocalist Helen broke tradition with a warm, broad beam, the audience
surged with appreciation.'

Find out just how good a show you missed by reading my BBC review of Ladytron at Popstarz.

This week…

Artsmusic234x200ladytron
Friday night
and it was time for Popstarz and one of the most anticipated PAs imaginable.   Joined by the inimitable Darren, we sang, danced, took photos and drank a fair bit of the old Purple Reef.

Over the last 48 hours I've been putting together a review of the gig for BBC London.  I'll link to it when it's up.

GhettoLast night I headed down to China White for the Deuce Bigalo: European Gigalo aftershow party.  It was always going to be interesting to go to such a notorious venue but in the end I did what I suspected I might and jacked it in to go to Ghetto.

There I shook my tail feather and danced in clothes far too posh for Falconberg Court. And went to bed at 5am. Whoops.

And the rest of the week?

Pop_quiz
Tonight I'll be trying to decipher a man who is incomprehensible but somehow hosts a pub based music quiz...

Alexhorne_thumb_pic

Thursday night and we're off to see some Comedy for the first time in ages.  This time it's Alex Horne, who I'm not familiar with but my partners in crime liked last time they saw him.   Despite this I'm the one dying with excitement about the show.  ITS ABOUT LATIN. How exciting is that?   VERY IS THE ANSWER.   (I studied Latin for 9 years. I LOVE IT)

Then its popstar fun to the max:

Come and Get It
- the new Rachel Stevens album will be getting the Karinski reviewing treatment for BBC Music.

Warning IT IS INSANELY BRILLIANT.  The review is going to be gushing all over her face.

Early afternoon I'm interviewing The Cardigans as they prepare for the release of new album Super Extra Gravity.

Dougit
Wembley is the place to be on Friday night when we head over to swoon at a young 17 year old boy.  Yes it's McFly and yes, I fancy Dougie.

Hello London

And indeed my first post for Londonist is up.

Have a look at http://www.londonist.com/archives/2005/09/mobo_awards_pre.php

Londonist is the first UK branch of spin offs from the original Gothamist (a site about New York) website.   It talks mainly, as you may guess, about London - cool things happening in the city, gigs, culture, sport - everything; and is one of London's highest read weblogs.

The problem is that I've always read Londonist to find out what's going on.  Now I need to somehow find out from somewhere else and be able to tell other people!   Funnily enough my specialist subject is going to be music!

Special Request :

If you hear of anything interesting happening or you are going to be getting upto anything fun  in London that I or Londonist might have missed drop me an email on my name at the domain of this site!  And you never know, you might see an article about it on Londonist some time soon x

Trixie the writer

One reason that karinski.net the blog has been neglected frequently during the last year (except for the playlists) of course, is that I've been busy writing for lots of places.

And I've just begun writing for one of my favourite sites -  Londonist.

I'm beginning to think that I need a site for my freelance work (writing & djing) but I can't think of a good domain name.   Can you?

Alternatively I could of course do something to karinski.net that involves the index page being a link to 1. Writing 2. DJing 3. Blog, but I'm not sure I want my writing work to be confused with my blog, as more often than not, things I write on here are a lot of tosh!

Miss-Chief at Trash Palace

As the DJ who we replaced at Miss-Shapes for 3 months has now returned, we are now doing fortnightly at Miss-Shapes.   From October 14th we will also be DJing the Popstarz/Pimp! warmup at Trash Palace every Friday night.

Last week we covered for someone at Trash Palace for the Miss-Shapes warm up,  but we'll be back at Ghetto tonight, so hope to see you there.

Our playlist at Trash Palace was open to a little more movement as it's a bar so I don' have to keep the dancefloor full.   Here is what we played (warning it's long!)

CDUK Review : Kaiser Chiefs, Ibiza Rocks

Kaisers

During ‘You Can Have It All’ a rabid brunette mounts the stage and with
security standing back with a bemused grin, the girl clings to
Ricky’s neck and thighs.

Find out what happened and see the full review online at CD:UK Online

I tell a bit fat lie

My reviews did get used for CD:UK, I just didn't notice!   They just got amalgamated into one big monster instead of individual ones.  Also the Go! Team and LCD Soundsystem bits on the review were written by James.

Whooo.

In other news I'm interviewing Jamie Cullum in the morning.  I'm doing this last minute for someone else who can't go, and to be honest know very little about the guy apart from the fact that he's vaguely cute and covered Everlasting Love for the 2nd Bridget Jones diary.  Help!

links for 2005-09-12

The below reviews were written for the CD:UK website but didn't end up being used as they eventually didn't do a Reading review section.

Watch out for my review of Kaiser Chiefs at Ibiza Rocks going up there later in the week.

Reading 2005 : Mylo in the Dance Tent

MyloNot since the transformation
of Norman Cook into Fatboy Slim back in 1997 has one man been heralded so much
as the saviour of dance music. And
Mylo is certainly living up to his name, with his crossover appeal for dance,
indie and pop fans becoming more encompassing by the day.

Making the dance tent fuller
than it had probably been all festival, the atmosphere was absolutely
electric. With 2 large screens
featuring Mylo’s video projections, strobes, and fantastic lighting displays,
this was the perfect festival closer for some. While some may scoff at the necessity of seeing a dance act play their
set live – after all he could just put his cd on and it would sound the same –
it was the audience that made this so spectacular. The building tension leading up to the
breakdown in Drop the Pressure was nearly unbearable and once unleashed your
oh so serious rock fans could be found dancing with the best of the pop kids.

Reading 2005 : Maximo Park in the Radio 1 / NME Tent

MaximoArriving in the NME/Radio 1
tent to a much smaller crowd than deserved, Maximo Park are determined to let
us know exactly who they are with a giant logo emblazoned at the back of the
stage. Frontman Paul Smith’s confidence
built up by a summer of touring, is apparnant, and he was completely at home on
stage, generally acting a bit more able to talk than your average lead singer.

Set wise they pounded tracks
from A Certain Trigger with admirable zest and poise. Although not having quite reached the success
of their peers, the
Kaiser Chiefs (sorely missed
on the bill by the way), their fan dedication is apparnant, with fans young and
old singing along to each song. 2nd
single Graffiti ups the tempo for the second half of the set and leads to
Smith scissor kicking across the stage, such is his excitement. Nothing can quite beat, however, the feeling
when debut single Apply Some Pressure is played. More of this please - we’ll watch how Maximo
grow with interest.

Reading 2005 : Ladytron in the Carling Tent

Ladytron01_2Up against the Pixies and
festival darlings
Kasabian it was always going
to be difficult for Ladytron to get the audience they deserved in the Carling
Tent. On the cusp of releasing 3rd
album, Witching Hour, this set proved that this bizarre mix of
Europe and Liverpool still has
mileage and they deserve more success than they seem to achieve.

Darting wildly between
albums, the slick black haired 4 piece manage to combine their cool
sophisticated look with songs rooted in darkness. Debut single He Took Her to a Movie is met
with ecstasy as the crowd softly dance around to the clinical beats. Live favourite Playgirl continues the
aloof mystique and the dancefloor gets more and more animated as they steadily
build up the intensity until reaching the pounding dance beats of climatic new
single Destroy Everything You Touch.

However cold and clinical
Ladytron may be on stage there is something so compelling and unsettling about
them and their music that it somehow feels strangely right.

Reading 2005 : Charlotte Hatherley in the Carling Tent

ChazWith a sexy new haircut, a movie director boyfriend and 2004’s most
underated album under her belt, there is no denying Charlotte Hatherley’s continuing
position as the sexiest woman in rock. Taking to the Carling Tent for the first time without the comfort of her
fellow bandmates from Ash, this was a note perfect, polished performance to a
surprisingly sizable and welcoming audience. Joined by her band, and cute girl trio of backing singers, tracks such
as the irresistable
Kim Wilde and surf guitarry Summer sounded as fun and energetic as on record. Stand out single Bastardo was met with a cheer, and even the rockiest
Ash fan, disapproving of their princess’ new pop path, could hardily fail but
bounce and sing along. Added treats for
the fans came in two forms. First,
having sung a song about her,
Charlotte launched into a
fun, punky version of Wilde’s most famous hit
Kids In
America
. And then fresh from success on
the main stage earlier that day, Graham Coxon joined
Charlotte on stage for a
Britpop guitarists love-in with a rendition of Stop.

Up against the Pixies on the bill, Charlotte did well by managing to keep the audience in her tent. We can only hope that when booking next year, it’s Charlotte by herself, not Ash, that return to the Main Stage.

Some girls

Each of these popstars made some songs which I think stand out in the whirlwind called popmusic.

And in every case, it's all about the 2nd album.

2000 - Billie 'could have been bigger than Britney' Piper gave us the amazing Something Deep Inside & brilliant Day and Night.

2003 - Bitchy Holly flopped hugely with 'State of Mind' containly the brilliant title track and a whole album full of 80s fulled electro pop.

2005 - After the horrid failure of album number 1, and well just no one being excited about her, Rachel is on the verge of releasing 'Come and Get It'. Her last 4 singles have been unfailingly brilliant and the songs deserve much greater success that they've ever got.

Not only is the new Ladytron single 'Destroy Everything you touch' amazing, but they are playing at Popstarz on 23 September 2005! WHOO.

But but, 23rd September, you people with good musical taste say to yourself... Isn't that the night Vitalic is playing at Fabric?

Well yes indeed it is, but he is also playing on the 7th October at Warwick SU, so I'll just see you there for it instead.

He made me do it

Del tagged me!  I can't do anything but oblige...

"List
five songs that you are currently digging - it doesn't matter what
genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're not
any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post
these instructions and the five songs (with artist) in your blog. Then
tag five people to see what they're listening to."

1. Clor - Love and Pain
2. Lush - Single Girl
3. Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch
4. Rachel Stevens - I said Never Again (But Here We Are)
5. LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations

But really, buy Clor's album - it's so so so good.

Charlotte Church - Tissues and Issues

I'm feeling pretty good writing wise : every review on BBC Music Pop currently has been written by me. Huzzah.

Anyway my new review has gone up and is viewable here or just read below

When former child star and operatic Voice of an Angel
Charlotte Church grew up, we knew things were going to be different. As
a feisty 19 year old with a rugby player boyfriend, she's been in and
out of the papers every since she discovered boys and alcohol. Tissues and Issues
sees Charlotte attempt to cross over from the classical chambers into
the pop pond, but were our expectations, dreaming of a pop saviour,
simply too high?

Unleashing "Crazy Chick" as her debut pop single, it
was obvious Charlotte wasn't working with the current trend of putting
80s electro beats behind her music. Instead here was a soulful,
confident ass-shaking hairbrush hit. Unfortunately it was a solitary
shiny penny gleaming out of a pool of mud.

Brimmed to the max with middle of the road ballads,
the album is sadly lacking anything clever, special or original and you
can't help but wish that collaborators such as Xenomania and Richard X
had been picked instead of those who were.

Single number 2 "Call My Name" is another motown
inspired number, but is sadly little more than "Crazy Chick Part II"
(the part without the catchy bit). The same can be said for
"Moodswings". "Let's Be Alone" is pretty much the only other upbeat
track on the album and here she fuses her classical sounds with middle
eastern twinged dance beats.

And so, into the ballads... "Easy to Forget" is just
that, and its slight urban sound makes it sound like a watered down
version of All Saints "War of Nerves". The frankly dreadful "Even God"
sees Charlotte lose all attitude and credibility and is nearly enough
to bring any sane listener to tears of boredom or laughter. Only "Fool
No More", heavily influenced by Jamelia's Stop, can redeem the 2nd half
of the album. You can just imagine Bridget Jones pensively dreaming of
her one true love, while listening to this song.

There is enough promise in Crazy Chick to
make you think that, no matter how bad this album is, one day she will
return with a more compelling set of tunes, given a better set of
producers and songwriters.

So pop pickers, our hopes are dashed this time,, but
for now let's keep those fingers crossed for a saviour in the form of
Sophie Ellis Bextor's 3rd album, or even better, a Billie comeback.

Do you want to

When I first heard the new Franz Ferdinand single 'Do you want to', I wasn't convinced.   Further listens have definately made my ears more in tune with it tho.

It sounds a little like a comedy song - I can just imagine Barbara Windsor running down a street holding her naked baps, while being chased by a cackling Sid James, and a shocked looking Kenneth Williams waving a hanky.

But it also was really reminiscent of something else.   J thought similar but it turns out we were thinking of two different tunes.  Upon listening, both were correct.

ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin
Go West - We Close Our Eyes (a very distinct bit)

Agree?

STOP EVERYTHING

Image_6

THE NEW RACHEL STEVENS SINGLE IS AMAZING

Crazy Folk

Although everything in London has pretty much returned to normal there is still a small fear of dread as you head to the tube station in the morning and realise it's Thursday.   Last week I completely forgot and was only reminded by a workmate talking about 'the fear'.  Today I was reminded by police outside our tube station.

At the 2nd stop on our journey, an american man wearing a puffed up gilet/waistcoat type thing got on and was jabbering away to himself. He leapt over us to sit on the seats in the corner (bench facing seats) and was ranting about cot death, killing children, and putting bullets in the back of people's heads.   Continually.   He was completely crazy.

Needless to say I got off at the next station and got a bus the rest of the way.   I was just a little annoyed that there wasn't even a member of tube staff anywhere near the platform, and I couldn't find anyone to tell about this man until I reached the turnstiles.  At this point I told the man in the little glass hut, who didn't really seem to care, that there was a man acting seriously suspiciously.    Grrh.

So I was late for work, and missed my opportunity to have a McDonalds slice of fruit toast.  I hear it's good?

Had fun at Trash Palace last night listening to the new Goldfrapp album before going on to work at Misshapes.    The album was pretty backgroundy but it seemed a continuation of their Black Cherry sounds.   It's out in 2 weeks and I'm looking forward to it.  I can't believe how high Ooh La La will be entering the chart on Sunday!

DING DONG

Miss Karinski is listening to

The Cardigans - I need some fine wine, and you, you need to be nicer
A combination of the folksy sounds from Long Gone Before Daylight and the harsher sound of Gran Turismo, but without any electroness.   Sounds a little Roisin Murphy.   It'll be getting a spin on Thursday night, get in before 11 if you want to hear it.

The Sugababes - Push The Button
Oooh. We like :-)

Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch
I was trying to work out earlier if this is my single of the year so far.  I knew I should have started keeping that chart back in January.    Even if it's not my favourite (which it might be) it is WAY UP THERE.   Out at the end of the month, this is a monster.  Come on Ladytron, break through, let others see how great you are.

Girls Aloud - Long Hot Summer
Do I like this? Do I? Do I really?  I certainly want to like it, with all my heart, but hmmm.  It's certainly taken a lot of listens to get me to vaguely liking it.   The ba ba ba bit is ace, and the more you listen the better it gets.  But hey, what do I know.  I didn't like Love Machine at first.    SPAZMO!
[edit: i've decided yes i do like it, it's ace!]

Shelly Poole - Hard Time for the Dreamer

The title track from Miss half of Alisha's Attic debut solo album.  It's lush!

Rousing Fun

What's exciting the life of Miss Trixie Karinski at the moment....

The Cardigans :
Whoo! They are on their way back.  I've been watching this webpage for months and it's been gradually filling up with information.  Although ridiculously long, I insanely love the title of their new single, I need some fine wine, and you, you need to be nicer.  I don't think I gave Long Before Daylight as much attention as I should have when it was released.   When You Kissed Me has to be up there as one of the most beautiful songs out there.

Clor
: The album 'Clor' is out today, and it is brill.   Quirky, indie mixes seemlessy with beats, bops and quirky electronic twinges.

Razzamatazz :  Recently discovered, currently up there with my favourite Pulp songs.

Projectile Vomiting : The cherry has been popped. A big thank you must go to the very lovely Blue Aftershock.  High five.

Brighton Pride  : We're off to Brighton to DJ at Brighton Pride. How cool is that!

Camembert : It's a type of cheese... of course I'm excited!

Doctor Who : Thanks go to the BBC for continuing their theme of spoilering Doctor Who.  But still it's made me excited about it again.  Only 4 months to go. Groan.

Self Indulgent Guff

This weekend I went back with the best friend to the motherland to have fun, frolics and visit the family.

Every time I go back it becomes more and more apparnant that there is very little reason to go back. I've taking a different path in life from those who are still there and it's very apparant when hooking up with old friends that we just have nothing in common anymore.

Once upon a time, I couldn't even imagine myself leaving my hometown and the clubs and the fun behind, but now I can't imagine any reason for being there.

Current life is, to be overly enthusiasic, just *fabulous* and I have both the best friend a girl could ever wish for and other excellent friends surrounding me.

Wow, this is sounding like the kind of super indulgent guff that I hate so much from one blogger (i'll spare the link), but to that, all I say is BOSH BOSH BOSH, Pigeon!, BELGOROBOT SAYS XXXX, *tear.
