London calling…

Found : >1 funky radio jobs (hence major mind fcuk going on)

Wanted : A room to live in.

A 22 year old girl seeks a nice spacious room in a house full of cool people of the similar age. Must be non psychos. Need broadband, somewhere to park (unless its city centre) and an easy route to Oxford Circus. Will reiterate, housemates must not be psychos. Enjoy watching films with a glass of wine, listening to new music, going out dancing to rubbish music, and playing with computers in a non geeky way. Big buffy & angel fan. Not a big fan of the Stereophonics recent work.

So if you have a room, or you know of anyone who does, then please let me know!

Alternatively let me know about your bit of London, whats fab about it and whats not.

The Honeymoon

Sometimes you hear a new act you instantly enjoy and want to share with others. Yesterday at Spring Conference, BMG kindly brought a new signing, The Honeymoon up, to do a short set.

The band comprise a male guitarist & vocalist and a female Icelandic vocalist. Thorrrun and the music is haunting melodies with a lovely summery chilled out vibe.

I would definately recommend a visit to their website to listen to their track Passive Aggressive

Various family shots of me and (ick) Babies!

Now... aren't you excited.

Given Ed doesn’t have a blog

... yet! He has become prone to leaving HUGE comments in my box. So instead I'll publish it here for the world's pleasure and probably so I can answer it easily without everyone wondering what I'm going on about....

"Tal,
I think youve missed the point a bit.
While I agree whole heartedly with the 'friend of yours'(actually, is that me?!), it seems that the significance of yesterday was that the variety of music they played was far better than ever. In my mind, the problem with radio one is that its daytime playlist represents such a tiny number of musical genres. While Radio 1 is charged with playing 'pop' music, the variety of music they play (during the day) doesnt even represent what is actually in the charts (which is still quite varied). Im going to refrain from whinging about 'RnB', but instead leave you with two thoughts:

1) I think the BBC should
a) assume their listeners are intelligent and open minded enough to want to listen to a much wider variety of music,
and b) assume their daytime DJs are intelligent enough to play what the listeners want to hear (and maybe even what they themselves want to hear) - I cant shake the feeling that the daytime DJs are not in fact 'disc jockeys' but 'mic jockeys' - as they get told what to play (I assume by people who are old. and not cool. and think RnB is the answer to everything. argh!) Also, if the DJs were playing what they wanted to hear, they would stop taking the piss out of the music they're playing (often - especially Moyles and (the wonderful) Mark and Lard). It doesnt exactly inspire confidence in the station's 'mission statement'.

2) In the classical world, Commercial stations (ie Classic FM) play a far smaller variety of music than the BBC equivalent (ie Radio 3). This is because they have to have a hardcore listenership in order to guarantee advertising deals keep coming their way. The BBC dont have to worry about this, so their stations (like radio 1 in the pop world) should be a bit more adventurous with their music - they are after all providing a 'public service'. Educate us for fucks sake.

I think Radio 1 in the eveings and early mornings, Blue room, Gilles Peterson, Lamaq Live, John Peel (god) is fantastic. Why not have a bit more of this variety during the day? - I personally cant bear to listen to Radio 1 for more than an hour or so during the day because you soon realise they only have about 20 trackis on their playlist. SO if they ever bring Mark and Lard back, come find my mixing between their hugely amusing links and mp3s from my own collection, in order to avoid the drivel that is the daytime playlist.

Politically correct hat off:

The kind of mindless wankers that enjoy RnB and Scooter 24/7 dont have the brain capacity to object to more variety during the day (so would probably still listen), and even if they dont, there are a million crappy yokal stations playing this shit everyday (plus they can save some money off their next tacky faux-leather three piece suite by listening out for the DFS adverts, and singing along to the abomination against music that is 'follow the leader' while bouncing along the coventry ring road on the way to their bail hearing in their hyundai coupe (the worst car on the road))...

And even if Radio1 do lose their listenership - it shouldn't matter. Theyre the BBC. THEY DONT NEED LISTENERS. WE PAY WHATEVER THEY PLAY. educate us. go crazy fools.

ahhh - rant over."

The Nation’s Favourite

It's no big secret that I'm a great fan of BBC Radio 1, and listen to and enjoy a great deal of their output.

Today, however, saw Radio 1 take a break from the norm and run without a playlist with the tracks decided by you, the listener. Radio 1 left it, or so we believe, completely upto the listener. And by eck it was good. Edith Bowman started the Ten Hour Takeover at 10am, followed by Vernon Kay finishing with Scott Mills. The listeners loved the idea and really tried to abuse the system with the most random tracks and those you would never ever expect to hear on any station, nevermind Radio 1. These included : The Frog Chorus, Last Christmas (yes in April!), Suspicious Minds, The Minder theme tune, Motorhead being followed by Hanson, The Blind Date theme, lots of Abba, etc etc Along with some awesome tracks that you just never hear on the radio these days.

A friend of mine said "well maybe this shows how rubbish their actual playlist is" and the normally almighty Popjustice echoed pretty much the same sentiments: It's almost as if the Ten Hour Takeover exposes Radio One as having totally misjudged, on a daily basis, what their listeners (who seem to be ten years older than their target demo-so-called-graphic) actually want to hear.

However imho this isn't a very valid opinion for at least 2 reasons:

1) The majority of songs which were played today were old tracks. They were the type of tracks which excite the listener if they haven't heard them for a long time. However this excitement and joy in hearing the tune would be lost if the tracks were played on regularly. Hearing Green Day - Basket Case and Hanson - Mmm Bop today got me genuinely excited about music. While the Hanson track may be pretty rubbish, it was the fact that I hadn't heard these tracks in a long time, and they could emote feelings or conjure up memories long forgotten. I'm sure if you heard Hanson every day, you may think your local radio station was going mad. However hearing it very occasionally means the sense of "wow remember this tune!" is kept. This was the very essence of the day and the listener understood this and requested these tracks rather than the current chart songs.

2) Radio 1 is not there to provide the same old tunes, the same old drivel that some other stations may do in order to keep the majority of listeners happy, rajars high, and thus survive in the world of commercial radio. Radio 1 is there to provide something different to the 14 - 25 year old listeners, something different in terms of presentation and in terms of music. It should be there striving to play new and a wide range of music which their listeners may be interested in, and a selection of familiar (chart) tunes which keep the listener happy. Reverting to a similar style of music as was played today on a regular basis, would see Radio 1 provide nothing different to any commercial similarly targetted age group, and there would be no need for it to be kept within the remit of public service broadcasting.

I enjoyed today a lot. I spent the majority of it sat in queues on the M6. And a good deal of that behind a blue Citroen Saxo with 3 18 - 20 year old lads in it. Now, personally, one of the things I enjoy the most is singing, and believe me when i'm in my car alone or not I sing along quite happily to the radio. Seeing a girl do the same in a car next to me made me incredibly embarassed about what I must look like when doing this! The guys in front also saw this girl and were amused, and this led to me singly slightly less full force than normal! But I think the majority of the cars surrounding me were listening to the Ten Hour Takeover, as when Guns & Roses - Sweet Child of Mine, Green Day - Basketcase & particularly Prodigy - Firestarter came on, you could see the excitment within a lot of cars as bored young people in a traffic jam, positively bounced along to the music, saw each other bouncing along, and a sense of community for those enjoying the music was formed!

See traffic jams are good sometimes (well....)

I think all the above makes sense! It's quite late tho so my arguments might not be quite as eloquantly formed as they could be.

If you want to see how today was acheived technically then may I suggest you check out the excellent articles from two people within BBC Radio & Music Interactive - City of Sound and Hack Diary

The Bracket Quiz

[Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, find line 4. Write down what it says]

You only have to look at other media that stand around broadcasting to see unregulated environments.

[Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What do you touch first?]
An unused, not plugged in printer.

[What is the last thing you watched on TV?]
Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. I love this show. Tonight it starred Omar Sherif who said some hilariously non pc things, the somewhat too prim and proper Julia Stiles (I really want to see Oleana.. anyone want to join me?), Jools Holland and Aqualung.

[With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?]
Scissor Sisters - Someone to touch

[When did you last step outside?]
Yesterday evening when I got home after a long drive back from Bristol.

[Before you came to this website, what did you look at?]
Relly's blog.

[Did you dream last night?]
Yeah I don't think its suitable for publication though.

[What is on the walls of the room you are in?]

Hmm nothing that much. In the study at home. I have a clock which I nicked from my sixth form study room when the school shut down. (Ooh maybe they will read my blog and through a disciplinary on me ;) ), lots of school certificates, and a very unme dreamcatcher which some friend who obviously knows nothing about things I like bought for me and my grandad randomly stuck the ugly thing on my wall.

[Seen anything weird lately?]
Heidi with a pop sock over her head.

[What do you think of this quiz?]
It allowed me to plug the scissor sisters again so good.

[What is the last movie you saw?]
Hmmm. I think it was 28 Days later with Mel, Nil & Hagen Daz in my room towards the end of term. The cinematography is gorgeous and I very much enjoyed the first 2/3rds of the film but then it went somewhat off the boil.

[If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy first?]
A radio station,

[If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?]
Hmm.
Stumped.
Oh... to erase the world of prejudices and bigotry.

[Do you like to dance?]
Does Ed like women?

[George Bush?]
Daddy!

[Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?]
Hmm. I'm sure I used to have ideas for this when I was about 15. It's the kind of thing girls sit around and talk about. But I think I always found girls names hard. Um... Buffy. No not really. Also it depends greately on the surname. Quite like Jemima - its cute as a kid and quirky as a young 20 something starlet. Like things ending in -ia too

[Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him?]
I've always liked Josh but I'm sure that some famous person/tv show will ruin that for me. Quite like Max. And I'm sure I could think of something better if I had 9 months to put my head to it.

[Would you ever consider living abroad?]
I see myself as liking New York and wanting to live there. But having never been there I could be totally wrong. Hopefully will get to go around Xmas time.

You’re disgusting, oh and you’re nasty

I've been away in Bristol doing work experience at Creation, and organising the manic but potentially amazing SRA Conference. We've been working really hard to make this a fantastic conferenec and it really looks like it migth be one. Check out our plans here.

So what going on, what to tell you me snuggles...

-> This was ages ago but I went to Speech Radio run by the Radio Academy towards the end of February. This year it was focusesed around Breakfast Shows and featured lots of fantastic speakers and sessions, in particular Mouth to Mouth which discussed the format of call in shows, a session run by Neil Pringle from BBC SCR, and the ever lovely Colin Murray. I'm going to Music Radio in a few weeks which looks equally as good if not better !

-> Last weekend I was stuck for something to do so planned Saturday night out in London with the RaW gang. Went over to Jamie's on the way as it was in the middle of the route between Bristol & London. Got drunk in Marlborough and had a great time, thanks to Jamie for the hospitality! Saturday was excellent, went for a lucious meal in Browns at Leicester Square with Pauly & Dave, Fadefast, Stu and Russ H before us meeting a whole host of others in a pub. My camera did end up with a whole host of photos of Stuart's crotch tho (may I point out not taken by me!!!!!!) but you will have to wait until I'm back at uni and can upload those photos for that pleasure.

-> On Tuesday night Heidi & I spent the evening in London at the Sony Awards nominations party which was pretty good fun. I was a bit worried about going alone and not knowing anyone but we managed to scab a ticket for Heidi from somewhere. Met some cool people and got drunk with one of the nominees from BBC 7 who was a sound bloke. Kevin was there hosting it so we caught up with him and lots of ASRA people which was pretty cool. Moonie & Garrido joined us later on in the pub and I got smashed on wine..

-> SCISSOR SISTERS!!!!!!!!!!!! Went to see them last Wednesday at Bristol SU. I've been a fan since I heard Comfortably Numb and then got the album, and let me tell you, if you do get the chance to see them live then do because they put on a fantastic show. And don't be all they ruined pink floyd on my ass! They are so much more than that. Jake Shears is for starters a very camp Justin Hawkins :) Trust me boys and girls, try out Filthy and Gorgeous, Return to oz or Tits on the radio or or or…….. Just goddamn by the album its fantastic. AND they are playing the final fling!!! I get to see them twice in 3 months. Yay. They are part of Carling 24 Live on May 1st. Only £10. GO and see them.

-> Talking of the final fling lineup it's Ash (!!!!!), Scissor Sisters (!!!!!), Amy Winehouse, and Spooks. However I've been rather cheekily scheduled to work it, my last top b, and my last night at uni ever. I thought asking me might be somewhat curteous :-)

-> Pauly evililly convinced me on the goodness and beauty of an apple iBook during the weekend, and I'm now on the lookout for one. The Apple Refurbished store has had lots over the past month or so, but this week there weren't any and I was muchos gutted!!

-> Congratulations go to Stuart and Krissia with their news. I think you're crazy, but crazy in a good way :D

-> I had a very drunk phone call with a sober Pat, Pat returned the favour tenfold :D

-> I've decided I love cats and want one when I move to London (well maybe unless it means I can't have a flat I love!)

-> It's me or RON for SRA Chair....

-> Dave got his HP placement!

-> Congrats to GUST and Martin with his winning of Best Student TV Station !

-> I applied for two jobs. Fingers crossed!

-> 4 hero - Les Fleurs is the tune from the Baileys floating ad and is fantastic. I think I'm going to order the album!

And that... I think... is it!
